The Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, a place of both historical and religious significance, stands as a testament to the faith and sacrifice of the Uganda Martyrs. It marks the site where 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican converts were burned alive in the late 19th century for refusing to renounce their newfound Christian faith, as ordered by Kabaka Mwanga II of Buganda. These executions occurred during a period of religious and political tension at the Buganda royal court.
