The Association of Ambulance Professionals Uganda (AAPU) was founded in 2017 to unite and professionalize Uganda’s emergency medical services (EMS). Before AAPU, ambulance services mostly relied on untrained drivers, which put patient safety at risk. AAPU brought together different stakeholders, set training standards, and advocated for proper regulations. AAPU has developed and delivered first aid and emergency care training, helped inspect ambulances, and coordinated disaster response. It also established a modern training center in Kampala in 2023. Today, AAPU has over 1,000 members and plays a major role in shaping national EMS policies, improving ambulance quality, and supporting professional development for ambulance staff across Uganda.
