The American Recreation Association (ARA) in Kampala, later known as Makindye Country Club, is a social and recreational hub for American embassy staff and their families during a period when Uganda was less developed, providing a comfortable and secure environment. The club offered amenities like a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a play area for children, and a well-stocked bar and restaurant. It also included a commissary with a variety of imported goods.
