Kampala Car Free Day
7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Buganda Road
Event Details
This Sunday, Kampala will come alive under the theme “A Livable City – Enjoyable Streets” with a special Free Day dedicated to reclaiming the streets for people rather than cars. The initiative is designed to showcase a healthier, more sustainable, and more inclusive vision of the city by temporarily closing off sections of major roads to motorized traffic. In their place, residents and visitors will have the opportunity to walk, cycle, and enjoy a vibrant street experience free from congestion, noise, and pollution.
Throughout the day, the streets will be transformed into spaces of recreation, culture, and community connection. Activities such as leisure cycling, guided walks, and fitness sessions will encourage active lifestyles, while live music, street performances, and art installations will bring a festive atmosphere to the city center. Families will find areas for children’s games and creative activities like chalk art and face painting, while vendors and local entrepreneurs will display food, crafts, and sustainable products to engage the community in both fun and learning.
The Kampala Free Day is not only about celebration but also about reimagining the city’s future. By highlighting the benefits of non-motorized transport, cleaner air, and accessible public spaces, the event inspires residents to envision a city that is safer, healthier, and more people-friendly. Under the theme “A Livable City – Enjoyable Streets”, the day emphasizes that urban spaces should serve everyone and that with intentional planning, Kampala can continue its journey towards becoming a modern, inclusive, and environmentally conscious capital.
